THE ART OF CHOOSING
YOUR DIAMOND
Four Qualities. One Extraordinary Stone.
A diamond’s beauty is shaped by the relationship between its individual characteristics. Understanding the Four Cs — cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight — allows you to make an informed decision and discover the qualities that matter most to you.
Cut — The Architecture of Brilliance
Cut influences how effectively a diamond handles light, contributing to its brightness, fire, and scintillation. A well-executed cut can bring remarkable life to a stone. Its proportions, symmetry, and polish work together to create the visual qualities that make a diamond captivating. For many buyers, cut is one of the most important qualities to prioritise when selecting a brilliant diamond.
Colour — The Subtlety of Light
For colourless diamonds, colour grading generally assesses the absence of colour on a scale from D to Z. Differences between grades can be subtle, particularly when viewed individually. The metal surrounding a diamond, its shape, and the lighting in which it is seen can influence its overall appearance. Whether you prefer a bright, colourless look or the distinctive beauty of a fancy-coloured diamond, your choice can help define the character of your ring.
Clarity — Nature's Unique Imprint
Clarity describes the internal characteristics and external features present in a diamond. These may have formed during its creation or developed through its natural history. Many inclusions are difficult to see without magnification, and diamonds with different clarity grades can appear remarkably similar to the unaided eye. Understanding clarity helps you decide which characteristics matter most while balancing beauty and value. Flawless (FL) – No inclusions and no blemishes visible. Internally Flawless (IF) – No inclusions visible but does have blemishes. Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) – Inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader. Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) – Inclusions are observed with effort but can be characterized as minor. Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) – Inclusions are noticeable. Included (I1, I2, and I3) – Inclusions are obvious which may affect transparency, brilliance and durability.
Carat — A Measure of Weight
When exploring the world of exceptional diamonds, weight is often expressed in carats and points. One carat is equivalent to 100 points, making a 0.25-carat diamond a “twenty-five-pointer.” Diamonds weighing one carat or more are typically expressed in carats and decimals, such as 1.08 carats, pronounced “one point oh eight carats.” Carat weight contributes to a diamond’s rarity and desirability. When two diamonds are comparable in cut, colour, and clarity, the larger stone will generally be rarer and may command a higher price. Yet true distinction extends far beyond size alone. Two diamonds of equal carat weight can possess remarkably different qualities, each distinguished by its brilliance, proportions, and individual character. At Balance Origin Exclusive Jewellers, we believe that the appreciation of a diamond begins with understanding the harmony of its defining qualities. **Carat, cut, colour, and clarity** each play an essential role in shaping a diamond’s beauty and value. Together, these four characteristics reveal the qualities that make each diamond uniquely captivating.
